Britain To Implement Syariah Law?
Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams (pic).
In his recent interview with the BBC, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr.Rowan Williams provided the rest of the Britian’s citizens with an outrage and shocking remarks saying that the implementation of Syariah Law in UK is unavoidable. He said that the introduction of Syariah Law could help improve Britain's flagging social cohesion.
His statement later echoed by Britain’s most senior judge, Lord Nicholas Philips. On Friday July 4, he suggested that Syariah Law could play a role in British legal system. Both individuals mentioned above are British’s most influential personality in UK’s legal system.Despite being strongly criticized by British’s top leader; they stand firmly on what they had said.
Are we going to witness a historic transition in British legal system ?
Sadly no. Michael Ellam, Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman rejected Williams' proposal saying that “Brown believes that British law should apply in this country, based on British values.”
For myself, I’m quiet amazed and impressed by the Archbishop remarks regardless whether its going to be a moment of truth for UK’s Muslims or not. His readiness to accept the accommodation of Syariah Law in British legal system quiet unthinkable. When an ardent follower of Christianity in one of the Christians most powerhouse country , has welcome Syariah Law as part of the medium of mediation, this could be something interesting. I was totally flabbergasted.
As I said just now, I really don’t mind if the Archbishop’s suggestions ends up nothing. Logically, its going to be like that. Why ? Because majority of the British are Christians. To reject the Islamic Law in their legal system is acceptable. The question now is, are we, as a Muslim willing to implement Islamic Law in every aspect of our life? Marriage, business, economy , banking and etc? Are we ready to embrace it? A multiracial country isn’t an obstacle nor restrictions for us to let the beautiful of Islam to spread in every inch of our life. God willing.
